This report is based on a review of existing literature and interviews with key informants, as well as some additional surveys conducted by the MMC with refugees and migrants themselves at the border between Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire.
Based on information available as of January 2021, conflict-induced North-South movements are present in
the region. Information on the size, the profile of those displaced, and their needs remain anecdotal, and are based on individual testimonies from displaced people, protection monitoring reports, and field officers working for humanitarian organisations. In 2020, the impact of the Sahelian conflict on cross-border movements from Burkina Faso and Mali towards Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana appeared mostly indirect, through its impact on the economy in locations of first displacement, with the share of conflict-induced displacement among overall mixed flows towards southern countries remaining low overall.
