Bundesregierung zur Lage und zum deutschen Engagement in Mali/Sahel

The situation in Mali and parts of the Sahel region in the spring of 2020 is characterised by fragile statehood, increasingly violent, partly socially and ethnically charged conflicts over resources and the threat of Islamist-motivated terror.  [...] In addition to a stronger guarantee of security for the Malian population through an international military presence, international training and equipment efforts for Malian security and armed forces must also be made more effective so that they can assume greater responsibility for the country's security. This also applies in principle to Burkina Faso and Niger. Against thisbackdrop, the German Government is currently examining an expansion of its military Sahel commitment in coordination with international partners.
