About the company

Elettronica GmbH was initially founded in Meckenheim near Bonn as a branch of the Italian joint stock company of the same name to handle major orders from the German armed forces. It initially specialized on components for electronic reconnaissance and electronic combat and supplied corresponding components for the Starfighter, the Eurofighter and the NATO NH90 combat helicopter, among others.

Meckenheim is also the location of the federally owned IT service provider of the Bundeswehr (BWI GmbH) as well as the Federal Criminal Police Office. It is virtually in sight of two Fraunhofer Institutes (FHR and FKIE), which are very active in armaments and security research. In addition, central institutions of the Bundeswehr's Cyber and Information Space Command are located in the immediate vicinity, as are their service providers, many of which have additionally entered the "civilian" market in recent years.

Contribution to the EU border regime

According to its own statements, the company successfully entered the civilian market in 2000. Since then, it has mainly produced command and reconnaissance vehicles based on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter model for police and border protection agencies. The MUROS (Multirole operations support vehicle) product line, for example, is used both as a recognizable police vehicle and undercover in various countries around the world, e.g. during demonstrations. The company was involved in the EU research project ROBORDER, which was designed to test the use of unmanned land robots in border protection. It can be assumed that vehicles from Elettronica have been and will be used in other EU projects and border protection missions. In 2020 the company with around 100 employees still generated around three quarters of its sales in the "Defense" segment, according to its own reports.
