About the company
The Turkish bus and military vehicle manufacturer Otokar started in the 1960s as a manufacturer of coaches and regular-service buses under the license of &Magirus-Deutz and as such still supplies the Berlin public transport company, among others. In the 1980s, the company also started armaments production and is, among other things, the main contractor for the production of the most important Turkish battle tank "Altay".
Contribution to the EU border regime
The “Cobra II” armored personnel carrier from Otokar, which is equipped with comprehensive sensors, is used in border protection. According to Spiegel, its purchase was partly financed from the EU instrument for pre-accession assistance. The Cobra II is also used at the Turkish-Syrian border, where it has been proven that people fleeing were shot at. The Otokar ISV is a heavily armored vehicle designed primarily for "crowd control" and is delivered both as a personnel carrier and as a water cannon. The company is currently also researching the topic of “autonomous driving”, especially for public buses.
