About the company

The former security technology division of Siemens was sold to &Rheinmetall AG in 1993 and later acquired by Smiths Group. Smiths Group is known worldwide for its metal detectors and body scanners, which are used primarily at (air)ports and other sensitive sites. Smiths Detection also supplies hardware and software to screen baggage, trucks and containers, automatically identifying anomalies and suspicious items.

Contribution to the EU border regime

The company was involved in numerous EU projects on "Smart Borders", which - in line with the company's almost market-dominating position - were often of a very fundamental and conceptual nature. The company is also a leader in the detection of "hazardous substances", including drugs and pathogens, even at a distance, and also offers corresponding products for military users. In this area of business, too, it has received significant support from EU research policy during the development phase.
