About the company

GAF AG is a German company with "over 200 highly qualified" employees that sells satellite imagery - including to Frontex. Similar to COLLECTE LOCALISATION SATELLITES, it focuses on environmental and climate monitoring applications in its external presentation, but explicitly lists "security and defense" among the industries in which it is active, and also serves the extractivist industry - mining companies. Its headquarters are in Munich, but the company also has a site in Neustrelitz. This is a good kilometer away from the DLR site there, a central ground station for both civil and military satellite reconnaissance for Germany and the EU.

According to en.wikipedia.org, GAF has been part of the Telespazio Group, jointly owned by Thales and Leonardo , since 2003.

Contribution to the EU border regime

GAF AG is involved (together with AHT GROUP from Essen and BRL from France) in the program "GMES & Africa", a "framework program for the development and implementation of remote sensing based services supporting sustainable development in Africa [sic]". However, this includes conflict prediction and development, and a particular focus on the North and West African coast. Accordingly, the company has also provided imagery to the EU "border management agency" Frontex on several occasions. Following a smaller documented contract worth 224,700 euros in 2013, the company applied for a corresponding service contract worth 4 million euros in 2018 to provide Frontex with corresponding processed satellite images.
