Contribution to the EU border regime

DLR performs, often jointly with Airbus, central functions in satellite communication and reconnaissance as well as space observation for the Bundeswehr. It has also been one of the biggest beneficiaries of EU security research. In this context, it participated (under the leadership of Safran and with the participation of BAE Systems, Dassault, Airbus, IAI, Selex and Thales, among others) in the OPARUS project, which aimed to develop an open architecture for the use of unmanned systems in border protection (2010-2012). More generally, the ZONESEC project (2014-2018), again involving Airbus, Thales and Atos, focused on long-range surveillance through sensor networks.
