About the company

In 2017, Airbus spun off its electronics division as Hensoldt. Since 2020, Hensoldt has been a stock corporation. The shares are held by Leonardo (25.1%), KKR & Co (17.9%), among others. The FRG holds a blocking minority of 25.1%, which is managed by the Ministry of Defense. In fact, however, the Airbus and Hensoldt companies remained partially inextricably linked, even geographically. Hensoldt is considered the world's leading supplier of military sensor and radar technology, which the company also offers for border protection. On its homepage (as of July 2022), the company writes: "Our security solutions are well suited to monitor land and sea borders. [...] We offer a complete and modular surveillance system that includes optical and radar sensors, as well as the hardware and software for the situation centers. In these, all information is consolidated so that military and security personnel can simultaneously monitor hundreds of kilometers of border."

Contribution to the EU border regime

Contribution to the EU border regime: In August 2021, FRONTEX launched a technology pilot program to monitor the Mediterranean region, using HENSOLDT's ARGOS-II HD electro-optical infrared system (eoir) on two tethered balloons to provide comprehensive security surveillance.
