About the company
As Europe's largest armaments group, Airbus offers especially to the military a broad portfolio ranging from combat helicopters and aircrafts, satellite reconnaissance and communication to the operation of drones in for example foreign deployment of the German Federal Armed Forces.
Contribution to the EU border regime
Airbus is and has been involved in various EU border security research projects, bidding to operate a pseudo-satellite for Frontex and committing in 2020 to operate Heron drones made by IAI for Frontex. The German Federal Police alone uses 79 Airbus helicopters. "With the support (and partly financing) of the German government and the Federal Police, Airbus has supplied border surveillance systems to Saudi Arabia, among others. For Tunisia, for example, 25 thermal imaging cameras, 25 optical sensors and five night surveillance and radar systems each were financed from the German federal budget as part of the so-called "upgrading initiative". The conceptual role of Airbus in the upgrading of the EU's external borders is also reflected in EADS' participation in the development of the EUROSUR border surveillance system (Eurosur Technical Study). At the time, EADS comprised the defence division of Airbus and large parts of the electronics division, which have since been spun off to Hensoldt. In addition to EADS, Thales, Finmeccanica/Selex and the German technology company ESG, which otherwise specialises in military applications, were involved in the corresponding study.
