The Gambia has recently ratified circular migration agreements, including with Spain and Saudi Arabia. The schemes have produced disparate reactions among Gambian citizens, including resentment at being obliged to work abroad rather than at home and the selection process being possibly tainted by corruption. However, many still hope to be selected for these regular migration opportunities. In the case of the Spain circular migration MoU, hundreds of young Gambians stormed the dedicated offices to obtain application forms despite only a handful of
spots being available.

Overall, the agreements and the debates surrounding it once again demonstrate how Africans have to play the game of global neoliberal economics for their survival while being aware and critical of its exploitative politics. With their direct experience of the challenges of Gambian citizens and their expertise on the political, social and economic dynamics of migration, our panelists will critically reflect on the aforementioned events and discuss possible solutions which are fairer to Gambians and the country as a whole.
