Monthly Press Review June / July 2025

August 2nd, 2025

This monthly press review covers Eurafrican migration control, migration and displacement in African countries and news on the European border regime.

The selection of these articles is somewhat rough and contingent, and biassed on our interest in popular uprisings, and social and migration movements, but also in border politics, and militarization of social relations.

The main sources are News from sources like AJE, Guardian, New York Times, and others, but also newsletters from various actors. As we know, all the more after the Gaza experience, it is necessary to complement the German news landscape with articles from abroad. If anybody would like to contribute from other sources, let us know (contact[at]migration-control.info).

For a more distiguished way of doing press reviews, and more fokused on European developments, please Also see migreurop Press Review July 2025, and the ERCE Press Review.

So funktioniert Desinformation.

28.07.25 AJE: LIVE: Aid Israel allowing into Gaza still a ‘drop in the ocean’, UN says: The United Nations’ humanitarian chief tells Al Jazeera that while Israel’s decision to allow more aid into Gaza is welcome, it is still just a “drop in the ocean” as severe restrictions continue to block life-saving deliveries.

Legal experts have warned that the plan would violate international law because the civilians would be barred indefinitely from returning to their homes in other parts of Gaza, a restriction that would constitute a form of ethnic cleansing.

27.07.25 SWM: Hemedti named president of RSF-led presidential council: The Sudan Founding Alliance, a coalition of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) allies, former rebel groups, and pro-RSF political figures – commonly referred to as Taasis – announced on Saturday the formation of a parallel government intended to rival the military-led administration in Port Sudan. Hemedti assumes the presidency, while SPLM-N leader Abdelaziz Adam al-Hilu is named the vice president. The inclusion of Al-Hilu, who retains significant control over the Nuba Mountains, signals an attempt to forge a broader anti-SAF military and political coalition. Leaders of neutral Darfur rebel movements Al-Hadi Idris and Al-Tahir Hajar, both ousted from the Port Sudan-based transitional council last year for refusing to align with the SAF, also joined the council.

23.07.25 AJE: Sudan’s competing authorities are beholden to militia leaders, say analysts: Both the army-backed government and RSF-backed alliance are increasingly rewarding loyal armed groups on the ground.

22.07.25 TNH: In Darfur’s displace: ment epicentre, community kitchens shoulder the load: “We provided food and water because it is our custom.” Volunteers say their efforts in Tawila – part of a nationwide mutual aid movement that has mobilised since the war between the RSF and the SAF erupted in 2023 – have saved lives as people face some of the harshest conditions in the country.

(Also see TNH 02.08.23: How mutual aid networks are powering Sudan’s humanitarian response);

The violent actors are destroying civilian infrastructure and blocking humanitarian aid as part of their war strategy. In fact, the committed efforts of Sudanese citizens to protect themselves and others around them deserve more attention and support.

17.07.25 SWM: RSF rampages through North Kordofan villages, killing hundreds: The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have carried out one of the deadliest massacres of Sudan’s war, killing approximately 300 civilians, including children, in the village of Shak Al-Noum and surrounding communities of North Kordofan State.

17.06.25 AJE: UN fact-finding mission says Sudan conflict escalating, aid weaponised: The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has warned that both sides in the country’s civil war have escalated the use of heavy weaponry in populated areas while weaponising humanitarian relief, amid devastating consequences for civilians.

12.06.25 SWM: RSF seizes Libya-Sudan border zone: The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday afternoon captured the strategic Triangle border zone – located at the intersection of Sudan, Libya, and Egypt – marking a new escalation in the northern theater of Sudan’s deadly civil war. The Triangle area, located east of Jebel Uweinat, is of strategic value for both its geography and logistics. Its capture gives the RSF control of yet another transnational access point with Libya and potentially poses a threat to other parts of Northern State. The RSF previously has used the Libya-Sudan border crossing to smuggle weapons and profit from illicit trade and human trafficking.

02.06.25 TNH: As RSF attacks escalate, a Darfur town struggles to shelter the displaced: This is the first of two reports on the humanitarian emergency in Tawila – an epicentre of displacement in Darfur – and the efforts of local volunteers and community groups responding on the ground.

In 2025, crackdowns on departures from Mauritania led to a reduction in irregular crossings. However, the Atlantic remains one of the deadliest sea crossings worldwide, and the land journeys to embarkation points also remain fraught with risks.
In this context, throughout 2024, MMC, in partnership with UNHCR, interviewed 497 migrants recently arrived in Spain via the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean, or via the land crossing in Ceuta and Melilla. AEI: 3. bis 5. Oktober 2025 Rabat:
