Contesting border externalisation in West Africa: Local challenges, strategies and visions
Online discussion on 24th November 2022, 5 pm – 7 pm CET [Niamey, Lagos, Berlin], 4 – 6 pm [Dakar]
EU border externalisation policies are an increasing feature of the migratory and social landscape in West Africa. Yet neither the term “border externalisation” nor the European actors involved are familiar to most people in the region. How do local grassroots initiatives in the region, campaigning for migrant rights and free movement, position themselves in relation to the EU border regime? How can they challenge violent policies that are often crafted far away from the local context? This discussion brings together activists and practitioners based in the region to reflect on the challenges of contesting externalisation in West Africa, sharing experiences and strategies, and broader visions of free movement.
The roundtable participants are: Moctar Dan Yaye (Alarme Phone Sahara, Niamey), Saliou Diouf (Bozafii, Dakar), Fatou Faye (Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Dakar) and Rex Osa (Migration Information Point, Benin City / Refugees for Refugees, Stuttgart). The conversation is organised by the West Africa working group of migration-control.info and chaired by Aino Korvensyrjä. The speakers will speak English and French, simultaneous interpretation will be available in both languages, by Dolmetschkollektiv InterpRISE.

Les politiques d'externalisation des frontières de l'UE sont une caractéristique croissante du paysage migratoire et social en Afrique de l'Ouest. Pourtant, ni le terme "externalisation des frontières" ni les acteurs européens impliqués ne sont familiers à la plupart des personnes dans la région. Comment les initiatives locales de la région, qui militent pour les droits des migrants et la libre circulation, se positionnent-elles par rapport au régime frontalier de l'UE ? Comment peuvent-elles contester des politiques violentes qui sont souvent élaborées loin du contexte local ? Cette discussion réunit des activistes et des praticiens basés dans la région pour réfléchir aux défis de la contestation de l'externalisation en Afrique de l'Ouest, partager des expériences et des stratégies, et des visions plus larges de la libre circulation.
