About the company
Giesecke & Devrient goes back to a company founded in 1852. Since then, the company, headquartered in Munich, has specialized in printing banknotes and identity documents. Accordingly, it was also involved in fascism and colonialism. In recent decades, it has expanded its activities to include digital payment processing, identification systems and databases.
Contribution to the EU border regime
As part of EU research funding, Giesecke & Devrient was involved in the BIOP@SS and FASTPASS projects with Gemalto and AIT, among others, which were designed to increase acceptance of biometric recording and make it part of everyday practice at border crossings such as airports. This also makes the company a leading player in the introduction of electronic ID documents that are valid throughout the EU.
