About the company
Indra has its roots in the infrastructure and defense industries. Accordingly, Indra has also benefited extensively from several EU armaments research projects (including Ocean2020), positioning itself, by its own admission, as a "key player" in siphoning off EU armaments funds. Again, the company's focus is on information networks, cybersecurity, near-shore surveillance and unmanned systems.
In the 2021 financial year, Indra achieved revenue of € 3.390 million, had 52,000 employees, a local presence in 46 countries and business operations in over 140 countries.
Contribution to the EU border regime
Through its significant involvement in SIVE (Sistema Integrado de Vigilancia), Indra can be considered a pioneer of technological border upgrades, at least in Europe. The SIVE systems included various sensors, were installed along Spain's external border (including exclaves and the Canary Islands) starting in 2000, and thus provided the Spanish police agency Guardia Civil with an early, digitized situational picture of the coastal regions. Today, Indra boasts of being involved in the surveillance of over 5,000 km of land and maritime borders "in numerous countries on different continents." Indra was significantly involved in shaping the EU's research programs on security and border management and was one of the biggest beneficiaries. Indra is now a major provider of biometric access systems at borders, ports and airports, among others.
