About the company
Science for Humanity (S4H) is a company founded in 2004 in Bruges, Belgium. It seems that it offers only one family of products: The Human presence, Movement & heartbeat Detection System (MDS), which uses seismic sensors to detect the heartbeat and thus the presence of people in vehicles and e.g. containers. S4H offers the MDS in portable, mobile and stationary versions.
Contribution to the EU border regime
The company lists borders, ports and prisons as areas of application, but also refers to use at the access to critical infrastructure such as power plants and has apparently also sold its heartbeat detectors to the Lakenheath Air Force Base (UK). According to the company, its systems are used in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Morocco, the USA and China, among others. When advertising its products, the company relies on figures, analyzes and sometimes entire articles penned by the EU border protection agency Frontex.
