About the company
Tekever was founded in 2000 by computer scientists and engineers from the Instituto Superior Técnico. It quickly became one of the most important suppliers of drones for maritime surveillance. It also offers drones for military applications.
Contribution to the EU border regime
The company owes its rapid rise in this segment to its participation in numerous EU research programs on drone technology and border protection, as well as a major contract from the European Maritime Safety Agency. In addition to its involvement in "civilian" EU research programs such as ROBORDER and COMPASS2020, TEKEVER was also involved in the SPIDER project as part of EU defense research preparatory actions. Although the company occasionally describes itself as a market leader in the field of unmanned systems for security applications, it has only about 300 employees (as of 2021). The production of the border drones is located in Portugal and the UK.
