About the company
Dassault Aviation is a French aircraft manufacturer and, among other things, producer of the "Rafale" fighter jet.
Contribution to the EU border regime
Dassault led the consortium that was to explore the possibilities of using drones in border protection under the acronym BSUAV in 2006. This project was explicitly intended as a preparatory measure for the "security research" newly included in the EU Commission's Research Framework Program 6, from which Dassault in turn profited extensively. Also involved in the project was the company Thales, in which Dassault holds just under a quarter of the shares. Dassault has been involved on several occasions in promoting the integration of unmanned aircraft into civil airspace and creating the political and regulatory framework for this. Currently (August 2021), Dassault is leading the development of the Future Combat Air System (together with Airbus, Safran, Indra and Thales, among others), which is intended to be a next-generation combat aircraft that will comprise entire swarms of unmanned subsystems as a system.
